Should have married for money Like any woman in her right mind would do Instead I settled for love And don’t you know that that’s the worst thing you can do We fell short on rent We fell short on good time Now I got nothing to my name His name that I took for mine See I come from the country From a family of status and pride To counting tips in the city As a low-class, working man’s bride We fell short on rent We fell short on good time Now I got nothing to my name His name that I took for mine Now I’m back in the country With what little is left of my prime I got the ranch now I just need a cowboy On that forty-ninth parallel line Should have married for money Like any woman in her right mind would do Instead I settled for love And don’t you know that that’s the worst thing you can do

Carrying On 03:27
Somehow we got here, all in this room Well, it’s so filled with bliss, and so filled with doom We’re all dying together Somehow we’re laughing, and carrying on When we know in an instant, it all could be gone We’re all dying here together Life don’t cost nothing, but your sweet time And you know you’d be spending it anyway So hold every minute, like it’s your last dime For the good lord could take it from you anyday Sometimes I think that I’m the only one Who fears every second before it’s begun We’re all dying together Sometimes I think that I’m the only one Who looks to the sky and can’t find the sun We’re all dying here together Life don’t cost nothing, but your sweet time And you know you’d be spending it anyway So hold every minute, like it’s your last dime For the good lord could take it from you anyday Someday the dim lights of our night life will fade With the sand in the ashtray, we’ll be tossed away We’re all dying together Someday the comfort of kinship we knew Will all disappear down that dark avenue We’re all dying alone

High Holiday 04:17
High holiday And everyone’s together By the hearthside they will stay Inside from the weather Everyone together But I’m far away On this high holiday High Holiday Empty streets are full of sorrow All the shops are closed today Guess I’ll wait till tomorrow Find a bandstand to borrow And a guitar to play On this high holiday Midnight motorway Through Buffalo, Wyoming From the passing cars they say In the Big Horns it’s snowing Across the black ice it’s blowing And the lodgepole boughs sway On this high holiday
4.
You caught me in a time of doubt So young among the downtown glow The freshest bloom that you could find With a forlorn face, and a mouth filled with woe You caught me in a childish time And took me in, to still my shaking You became all I couldn’t live without Then you cut me off, now my veins are aching You walk through this world like you’ve been here before You’re always certain and I’m never sure I drank your poison now I’m going back where the water is pure I drifted from your grand devise And faltered from what you collected No longer satisfied your hungry eyes A half-grown field that you neglected I knew that you had turned on me So I ran for those southern hills Where the only people that I see Is the doctor, my Mother, and Dad You walk through this world like you’ve been here before You’re always certain and I’m never sure I drank your poison now I’m going back where the water is pure
5.
Intervention 02:37
Oh, it’s so hard to find the pleasure In the simple things I do But when I’m sitting by my lover’s side He makes the simple things feel new I swear the sugar in my coffee Is sweeter than it was before And the pills I take to keep my mind I don’t need them anymore For I’ve been healed by an angel from within an earthly man An intervention much more than divine the moment that our love began Many times he’s found me crying Lying on the kitchen floor Many times he’s found me filled with rage Kicking chairs and slamming doors Oh, I don’t know how he takes it All the other sides of me How he knows just when to hold me close And just when to let me be For I’ve been healed by an angel from within an earthly man An intervention much more than divine the moment that our love began
6.
A welfare Mom, and a farewell Dad And a child they never meant to have Taking turns with empty arms Trying to keep that baby safe from harm Dad took a job to work up north And he won’t be back till November fourth Mother holds her breath till rent is due Praying that his cheque goes through His Grandma gets him on Sundays Then back to Mother’s on Mondays Always playing with a different set of toys Seems like a dream for a little boy But no good soul should live that way With a different parent every day Waking up and never knowing To which crib they will be going That child’s been crying bitter tears As he’s passed around for years and years Never knowing how it feels to stay When he learns to walk, he’ll walk away And they all will wonder what they’ve done To raise up such a troubled son All they have to do is take a look Into that grown man’s baby book
7.
Gather my clothes from the bottom drawer Hang my fiddle up on the wall Lay the mandolin in the mandolin case Take my jacket from the bedroom door And hang it out in the hall Tomorrow they’re moving me to Providence Place We’ve always walked in circles Destinations never change I’ve known this place for ages But I can’t recall its name Dear old friend let’s not pretend What’s left of our youth is gone And vanished away like winter in May My dear friend good things will end I guess we’d better say so long It’s many a stage we’ve sang and played We’ve always played in circles That seldom ever change I’ve known this tune for ages But I can’t recall its name We’ve always talked in circle Conversations never change I’ve known you for ages But I can’t recall your name

It makes me shake and shiver To see the hoar frost quiver On aspen near the river South Saskatchewan The snowgoose turns to say We’re a long, long way to Galveston The factory steam it billows To mile-high poison pillows We wander through the willows And down the icy shore It’s then you turn to say “We’re a long, long way from Hudson Bay” Where the Sage and Sharp-tailed Grouses Used to look for spouses There’s a row of new-made houses Going up for sale Says the magpie to a mule deer I suppose they’ll build a school here pretty soon We crest the river ridges See the city which is Made of trestle bridges And traffic lights a-glow It’s then you turn to say We’re a long, long way from yesterday
9.
Here come the people of the morning And the heat of the light What a gentle way of warning That I slept right through another night Death comes every evening Crying at my door Standing cold out on the sidewalk But I know just what he’s looking for He’s looking for a body That simplest to find And he thinks that he can have me But I know it’s not my time When kindred souls are for away And the endless night is near These few words I often pray Spare me over one more year I never leave without a pen knife In my pocket or my hand For if I’m taken from this brief life It will not be from his hands
10.
People come down Down from the hills Down to the flatlands below That long, frigid winter that held us apart’s Departed with the cold wind and snow The water is swelling The creek bed is wide And it’s a long messy road into town But nothing can stop us for we’re on our way To hear that sweet orchestra sound Lonnie’s on rhythm Bud Romanksi’s on bass McGlynn plays the steel guitar Commence with a four-count and the crack of a drum Turn around at the end of the bar Fold up the tables Stack all the chairs Throw a little more salt on the floor Take a drink from the bottle and cast off the cork For we’ll dance the whole night or more A redwing down yonder does the Westphalia Waltz Sings “In Heaven There’ll Be No Beer” The Lark in the Morning does a French Minuet Since the Cock of the North is here The band is all packed up The last door is locked When the morning’s first sunlight appears May the Lord bless and keep you till we meet again Once more in the fall of the year
